More information on Caleta De Fuste
|
The up-and-coming resort of Caleta de Fuste is very much a town for couples and families. Less noisy, less bustling and more laid back than its larger, brasher counterpart Corralejo in the north, Caleta is the place to come for a relaxing holiday. More like Spain was 25 years ago, the town is clean, the locals friendly and there is a choice of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and pockets. Named after Caleta (cove) and Fuste (a type of boat), it is built around a large bay shaped like a horse show. Caleta itself has bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets, plenty of shops to browse around, a Championship golf course, ten pin bowling, amusement arcades and several mini-golf courses. You can take a camel ride, go swimming with dolphins, enjoy a luxurious bubble bath, play tennis or go ten pin bowling. A mini train runs from the harbour up Chipmonk Mountain to the Montecastillo Centre where there are more bars and restaurants. You don’t need to go up Chipmonk Mountain to feed the chipmonks though. These almost tame animals live in the rocky part of Caleta’s coastline – take some nuts and they will gently come and eat them out of your hand. The main beach is pale golden sand and designed to gently slope into the sea making for some of the safest bathing in Europe. You can go out some considerable distance and still be in water safe enough to stand up in so it is ideal for children. Around the main beach are numerous beach cafes and bars so refreshments are never far away. South of the main beach are a number of little sandy lagoon bays. These small bays are dotted with little stone circles to give privacy and have also been designed with families in mind. They have been created by excavating once solid rock and importing the beach from the north. These days stretch all the way to the Atlantico shopping centre on the outskirts of the town. Camel rides are also organised on this part of the beach. Here there are attractive gardens around a pleasant lake. If you carried on past this area (it is not paved) you will eventually come to the newly opened sea salt museum which gives a fascinating insight into how locals make sea salt (very popular in local dishes). Walking along the main beach promenade to the north will eventually bring you into the harbour area. Here, water sports abound. An area has been especially cordoned off for water sports – wind surfing, jet ski, scuba diving can all be arranged from here and you can go snorkelling. If you have never tried wind surfing, a special two hour taster session is available. In the harbour itself, you can relax with a drink and watch the world go by. There is an oceanarium with some very curious sea lions and here you can also take boat trips and go swimming with dolphins .The beach promenade continues past the harbour where rocky coves begin and local fishermen try to catch their supper. The force of the sea crashing into these coves makes for interesting spray formations. The interesting coastal path carries on all the way to Nuevo Horizonte on the outskirts of town.
