More information on Kapparis

Found on the South East Coast of Cyprus on once unused barren land Kapparis and Protaras now houses the tourist resort of Paralimni. In recent years, due to its rapid development, the whole tourist area of Paralimni Municipality has been called Protaras. This extends for approximately 10 kilometres beginning in the north in the Kapparis locality and ending in the south in the Konnos area. With life very much oriented to the tourist, Kapparis and Protaras offers all the amenities of home set in an idyllic location - home to stunning golden beaches (all with the EC Blue Flag), brilliant blue sea, rugged cliffs and small sheltered bays. It is from here that you can decide whether you wish to spend your day lounging by the swimming pool, bathing on the beach and, if adventurous, participating in the wide range of water sports, or even escaping from the main tourist area to deserted bays. At night Protaras comes alive with sound, with each bar and disco tempting customers in and outdoing their rivals. Offering the latest popular music, and some of the best DJ's in the business, Protaras's nightlife rivals some of the best in Britain, and has the finest selection of nightclubs, discos, bars and restaurants on the whole of the island.

Kapparis village too has a good selection of pubs and restaurants, offering a good variety of entertainment in the evenings.

A little way inland, the modern city of Paralimni bears little resemblance to the small quiet rural town that it once was in the early 1970s. In 1974 it went under a huge regeneration, when the town of Famagusta's population fled south during the Turkish occupation of the North. Paralimni grew overnight in both size and status making it the regional administrative capital. Due to this expansion, little of the original architecture remains, however, within the Town Square you will be able to find three churches (the oldest and most interesting is now open to the public and serving as a museum) as well as an open air theatre. Although the town retains little rustic charm it makes up for it with its friendly atmosphere and attractive gardens, which look incredible when in blossom, making any visit worthwhile.

The landscape surrounding Kapparis, Protaras and Paralimni is famous for its windmills. If you have a chance, then try to visit this picturesque landscape. If you travel to the outskirts of Protaras, you will find a small stone church named the ''Church of Ayios Ilias'' it is well worth a visit, if not only for the panoramic view that can be seen from the top. Another place of interest is the village of Dherinia, which contains three churches that are also worth a visit, however the village is best known for its views of the ghost town Famagusta - which, once a major tourist resort, lies empty. Boat trips can be taken along the coast to Cape Greco and Famagusta. There is also a regular local bus service running from Paralimni to Ayia Napa via Kapparis and Protaras.
